From wartime training station to regional economic driver

Founded in 1940 to support Canada’s wartime efforts, John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport has evolved over generations into a premier passenger gateway and one of the nation’s largest domestic air-cargo hubs.

OCTOBER 1940

Wartime Roots

The Airport is constructed as a wartime Air Force training station. Designed as a multi-purpose military airfield, it is used for flight training, air navigation, telegraphy and air gunnery before transitioning to a public facility after World War II.

1981 – 1986

The $55M Expansion Blueprint

Hamilton politician John C. Munro secures a $55 million federal investment to transform the facility into a regional hub. Construction spans five years and delivers:

  • A new east-west runway and improved taxiways
  • An extended passenger aircraft apron
  • An expanded passenger terminal building and access roadways
  • New car parking facilities and a dedicated fire hall
February 1993

Tragedy & Renewal

A devastating fire destroys Hangar 3 and a Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum hangar. Recognizing the museum’s profound community significance, Regional Council allocates $12 million to rebuild. The brand-new museum successfully opens its doors on March 2, 1996.

1996

The TradePort Era Begins

The City of Hamilton selects TradePort International Corporation Ltd. – led by local builder Tony Battaglia of WestPark Developments along with the operational expertise of the Vancouver Airport Authority – to manage and operate the Airport under a 40-year lease agreement.

Global Integration & Today

Today, TradePort operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Vantage Group, a global leader in airport investment and management. Since its 1981 expansion, Hamilton International has skyrocketed to become a vital passenger destination and a powerhouse for Canadian domestic air-cargo distribution.

Hamilton International Airport is proudly named after one of the city’s most prominent and influential political figures. Born in Hamilton on March 16, 1931, Mr. Munro was a fierce advocate for the region and an active community leader throughout the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

His political vision and success in securing crucial federal funding in the early 1980s directly laid the foundation for the modern, bustling airport structure we use today.
