Guided by the principles of People, Place and Performance, the Airport is proud to highlight numerous achievements in its annual report

Hamilton, ON (May 9, 2024) – John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (Hamilton International) is pleased to share its 2023 Year in Review annual report, highlighting operational achievements, infrastructure investments and community initiatives undertaken in 2023, including its focus on environmental, social and governance (ESG) leadership across all business and management practices.

Hamilton International started 2023 announcing a multi-million-dollar investment from Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridors Fund for its two-year Gateway Expansion and Sustainability Project (Project). The $46.9 million Project, jointly funded by the federal government and airport operator TradePort International Corporation (TradePort), will increase cargo capacity and support the movement of goods by strengthening, expanding and rehabilitating key airport infrastructure. As the largest domestic overnight express cargo airport and third largest cargo airport by payload in Canada, Hamilton International remained a critical link in Canada’s supply chain, facilitating 746 million kilograms in total cargo aircraft billable weight through the Airport in 2023.

Hamilton International saw continued growth in passenger air travel in 2023 as 820,011 total passengers travelled through the Airport, reaching near pre-pandemic volumes. Hamilton International was also thrilled to add another passenger airline to its network as PLAY, a low-cost carrier based in Iceland, launched its first and only service from Canada in June, providing access between Hamilton to Europe via Iceland. PLAY provides direct flights to the airline’s hub in Reykjavik and connecting flights to over 30 destinations including Amsterdam, Dublin, Copenhagen, London and Paris.

Hamilton International continued to create a positive environment for employees to succeed while inspiring the next generation of aviation professionals through various initiatives, including mental health first-aid training for airport workers, cooperative education and experiential learning partnerships, while also providing scholarships and bursaries. The Airport contributed over $90,000 of financial and in-kind resources to local organizations, continuing its commitment to integrating a Sense of Place through its community involvement endeavours, connecting employees with the communities they serve and sponsorships and donations.

The Airport also continued its ESG leadership in 2023 with new and continued initiatives taking place across all aspects of its business and operations. Hamilton International made progress toward its goal to reach net-zero through completion of its Decarbonization Assessment and an Investment Grade/Net-Zero Energy Audit, which informed its 2024-2030 strategy. The Airport also implemented operational efficiencies to reduce fuel consumption, improved its waste collection and diversion efforts, prioritized employee health and well-being and invested in the local community.

“I am immensely proud of the work we accomplished at Hamilton International this past year, which was the direct result of the remarkable efforts and collaboration among our employees, airport tenants and community partners,” said Cole Horncastle, Executive Managing Director, Hamilton International. “As evidenced by this annual report, TradePort and Vantage Airport Group continue to deliver on the vision established for the Airport in 1996. Together with our partners we are building an airport with attractive flight options for passengers, strengthening our position as a vital transportation hub for goods movement in Canada and serving as a critical economic driver for the City of Hamilton and surrounding region.”
